The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly often known as KAI, has arrested no fewer than 12 individuals for squatting on pedestrian bridges.
The state Commissioner for Atmosphere and Water Sources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated this on Wednesday in a publish on X.
Wahab wrote, “The operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps @LAGESCOfficial immediately performed clearance operations on the pedestrian bridges at Ikate Elegushi and Agungi alongside Ajah. Twelve miscreants had been arrested for sleeping on the bridge and contained in the opening underneath the bridge at Ikate Elegushi. The pedestrian bridge has been cleaned by
@Lawma_gov and it’s secure to be used.”
In the meantime, a Lagos-based lawyer, Festus Ogun, tackled the commissioner over what he described as punishing the poor for being homeless.
“Vagrancy Legislation was abolished within the Nineteen Eighties. Punishing poor individuals for being homeless and jobless is unacceptable. It’s a direct assault on human rights and the dignity of human individuals,” Ogun wrote by way of @mrfestusogun.
In February, KAI stated it arraigned and secured the conviction of 27 suspected miscreants arrested for illegal conversion of pedestrian bridges within the state to their abode.
The suspects, after their conviction, had been every sentenced to 5 months imprisonment by the courtroom, based on LAGESC.
